The Long Service Leave (Portable Schemes) Act 2009 defines what type of work within the services industry is covered under the scheme. The Service Industry Scheme commenced on 1 April 2025 for the contract cleaning industry. From 1 January 2027, the Services Industry Scheme will expand to include hairdressing and beauty services and food and accommodation services.

I am an employer, do I need to register?
If your business operates for the predominant purpose of engaging in the services industry and you employ someone who performs eligible work, you must register your business with ACT Leave when the scheme expands on 1 January 2027. You are also required to register your eligible employees and report their service to ACT Leave each quarter, with the first quarterly report due in April 2027. If you operate within the contract cleaning industry, you are required to register for the Services Industry Scheme from 1 April 2025.
I am an employee, am I covered?
If you are employed by a business that operates within the services industry and you perform eligible work, you are covered. Your employer is required to register you and report your service to ACT Leave each quarter from 1 January 2027, with the first quarterly report due in April 2027. If you work within the contract cleaning industry, you are covered under the Services Industry Scheme from 1 April 2025.
I am a contractor/working director, am I covered?
You can voluntarily register yourself under this scheme if you operate a business within the services industry and you perform eligible work, however, registration is not mandatory.
